Well-Being and Mental Health

At Southwick, we are passionate about the importance of teaching our children to understand the link between well-being and positive mental health.

This belief underpins our whole approach. There are a number of ways that we do this, beginning with a whole school approach, followed by a more targeted individual approach where needed.

Whole School (Tier 1)

  • Daily breathwork
  • 3 'well-being' days a year (with a focus on mental health)
  • Class based Thrive every second week
  • Play as part of the curriculum
  • PSHE/RSE curriculum
  • Termly forest school for every class
  • 'Worry boxes' in each class
  • Bi-weekly pupil voice sessions
  • Nurture group at lunch time
  • Restorative behaviour policy
  • Trauma sensitive approach

To access the tiers below, children are referred to our pastoral team, who make a decision about what support they may need.

Individualised Support (Tier 2)

Examples of available support (not exhaustive):

  • Emotional Literacy Support Assistant intervention (weekly sessions)
  • Individual Thrive support
  • Weekly, small group, forest school
  • Thrive Sports one to one work
