Intent

At Southwick School, our Design and Technology curriculum is guided by our Christian ethos and our core value to “do everything in love.” We aim to inspire pupils to be creative, innovative, and reflective thinkers who can design and make purposeful products while considering the needs of others with care and respect.

Our intent is for all pupils to develop a strong understanding of the design process, including researching, planning, making, and evaluating. We want children to gain practical skills across a range of areas, including textiles, structures, mechanisms, and food technology, while also building resilience, problem-solving abilities, and independence.

Design and Technology is taught through termly blocks three times a year, allowing for focused and immersive learning experiences. Within these units, pupils are given meaningful contexts and real-life purposes for their designs, encouraging them to think critically about how products are used and how they can be improved.

We aim to ensure that pupils understand the importance of designing for a purpose and for a user, fostering empathy and consideration for others. This reflects our value of “doing everything in love,” as pupils are encouraged to create thoughtful, functional, and well-crafted outcomes that meet the needs of others.

Through our Design and Technology curriculum, pupils develop creativity, technical knowledge, and practical skills, while learning to evaluate and improve their work. Ultimately, we aim to equip pupils with the confidence and ability to apply these skills in real-life situations and to become resourceful, responsible individuals who take pride in what they create.
