Medical Need and Allergies

At Southwick School, we are committed to ensuring that all children with medical needs and allergies are safe, supported, and fully included in every aspect of school life. Guided by our Christian vision, "Do Everything in Love" (1 Corinthians 16:14), we work in partnership with families, healthcare professionals, and staff to provide a caring and inclusive environment where every child can thrive.

From September 2026, Mr David Cook will be the school's Medical and Allergy Lead, supported by Mrs Brake. Together they will oversee the implementation of our medical needs and allergy procedures, ensuring that appropriate support is in place for all pupils.

All children with a diagnosed medical condition or allergy must have an individual Medical Care Plan and/or Allergy Care Plan. These plans will be developed in partnership with parents and relevant healthcare professionals, reviewed at least annually, and updated sooner if a child's needs change. Care plans will be shared with relevant staff to ensure that all adults understand a child's needs and know how to respond appropriately in both day-to-day situations and emergencies.

The school will:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical and allergy records.
  • Ensure care plans are reviewed annually and communicated to relevant staff.
  • Provide appropriate staff training where required.
  • Store and administer medication safely in accordance with school policy.
  • Take reasonable steps to reduce risks for children with allergies and medical conditions.
  • Ensure clear emergency procedures are in place and understood by staff.
  • Work closely with parents, carers, and health professionals to support pupils' wellbeing.
  • Promote inclusion so that children with medical needs can participate fully in school life wherever possible.

At Southwick School, we believe every child is unique and valued by God. Through compassionate care, effective communication, and a commitment to doing everything in love, we strive to ensure that all pupils with medical needs and allergies feel safe, supported, and able to flourish.
