English

Remembering a legend: James Earl Jones – The Hofstra Chronicle

"When I read great literature, great drama, speeches or sermons, I feel that the human mind has not achieved anything greater than the ability to share feelings and thoughts through language."  James Earl Jones

At Southwick, our aim is to ensure that all children become strong, confident readers who read for pleasure as well as for knowledge, and who can communicate clearly, eloquently and skilfully through written language.

In all classes, English is taught daily through a rich combination of dedicated English lessons, guided reading, handwriting, phonics and spelling. We strongly believe in a cross-curricular approach to teaching English, so pupils regularly read and write across a wide range of subjects, embedding and applying their skills in meaningful contexts.

Intent and Implementation  The Writing Process Curriculum Maps Southwick Reading Journey and Guided Reading
Our visionintent and implementation explain in more detail: what we teach, why we teach it, how we teach it and the knowledge and skills pupils will gain. Throughout the school we follow the same writing process, you can find more information here. Our curriculum maps outline the progression in knowledge and skills as the children move through the school. Y1, Y2, Y3/4, Y5/6 Our reading journey builds skills progressively, ensures consistency, supporting all learners and creates a strong reading culture that leads to confident, successful readers over time.
The Southwick 100 Handwriting Phonics  Spelling
Throughout their time with us, the children aim to read all of the 'Southwick 100'. 100 books chosen by the school community because of their quality, diversity and importance. Handwriting is taught daily in dedicated handwriting lessons. Teachers follow the Twinkl handwriting programme. We teach Phonics in YR, 1 and 2. Where necessary it is taught beyond these age groups. It is taught every day and we use the Sounds Write scheme. In Y3 and beyond we teach spelling using the Sounds and Syllables scheme. This approach was chosen, in part, because it builds upon the Sounds Write approach.
