Mathematics
"Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas."

Intent
At Southwick we aim to ensure that all children have mastered the key mathematical skills and concepts and have the ability to reason mathematically.
We do this by ensuring that from Reception onwards, a real emphasis is placed upon securing the strong foundations needed to build future learning.
Implementation
Maths is taught daily at Southwick. We have a carefully planned out curriculum that is designed to build, year on year in the key skills and knowledge. Our curriculum map can be seen below.
This is supported by our Calculation Progression documents that outline the progression in Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.
In Reception class our children continue their mathematical journey through the Mastering Number programme of study.
The Mastering Number programme develops children’s confidence, fluency and understanding of number by building secure number sense through small, carefully structured steps. It helps children understand how numbers are composed and related, supporting clear mathematical thinking and preparing them for future learning.
Into Year 1 they continue with Mastering Number, but also have separate daily maths lessons that address the objectives on our Curriculum Map. We follow the White Rose curriculum for our teaching sequence.
Impact
To assess progress, from the end of Year 1 and onwards, the children are assessed using White Rose assessment materials. This takes place three times a year.
